Just when I think Dave is getting the upper hand on this thing, something else comes along. He had another CT scan yesterday to check on the pocket of fluid they've been draining all week. The doctors were pleased with those results, but then found a disparate pocket of fluid somewhere towards his lower back. He spent the afternoon with the intervention radiologist so they could put in yet another drain. Unfortunately, this drain exits out his back - not very comfortable when you spend the majority of your days and nights on your back.
The doctor hasn't said if this will push back the Monday release we were hoping for, but if his stay is being extended it's probably good they haven't mentioned it given his mental and emotional state the past few days. I know he feels like the four walls of his room are closing in on him. I want to steal him away and head for the sand and salt water.
Oh, and a few people have asked how the inimitable Miss Molly McGeoy is doing with her broken arm. Let's just say she's discovered a quick and effective way to make her brothers squeal. Her cast doubles as a mighty effective club, particularly when used on unsuspecting brothers' heads.
I just went down the hall to check on Ian because I could hear him whistling (he whistles exactly like Dave) in his room a full hour and a half after he went to bed. He was musing about how cards people send that say, "Get Well Soon" seem kind of rude and demanding because they don't include "please" or "thank you".
When I see Dave in the morning, I'll let him know how many people are hoping for him to please get well soon (and thanks).

Ian's musings crack me up.
And he has a point; I'll have to remember it next time I send a card.
Golly, it's all up and down and up and down. I know both of you are doing your very best; and both you and David are going to get through this next bump. I will think "Come Home MONDAY thoughts"
for David.
Oh, and the visual of Molly clobbering her brothers with the purple cast? Guess they won't bug her too much for the next three weeks!
Ian's right - and Dave had a good point, too... I kept telling him he was "looking better" and finally Dave said to me, "you know, Jormain, you're looking a lot better, too!" and it made me realize what it must feel like to keep being told how much better you're looking (as though you weren't really looking all that great before!) - anyway, the last couple times I've seen him his spirits have been a little better, he's looked more comfortable/moving easier/breathing better, and his color looked better, so of course I meant to be encouraging but can see how that can be taken a couple of ways!!
It is a long road recovering from this great surgery, but even with more fluid here and there overall (when you look back week to week) he is slowly improving and will continue to do so. The farther out he is the better things will get...
Glad to see him eating a little, and getting the J-tube going again - hope to see him off the TPN soon (and gaining some weight back!!!)
Stealing him away to the sea and salt air sounds wonderful, a well earned treat for you both - maybe not Monday, but soon...
Oh yeah, and will you tell Dave to quit leaking & get better soon, PLEASE!!!
Thank you! :) - jc
Shannon,
I speak from experience when I say with surgery it is always two step forward and one steps back. The thing to keep in mind is that the net result is moving forward. I know it does not seem that way now but I assure you it will be. As for the fluids, this is a new thing for Dave. I remember them to be great pockets of deadly Gas so fluids may not be.....
You are all in my family's prayers (even if they are Muslim ones).
Stay Strong.
Saeed
I love the purple club! She is a woman after my own heart! I promise to add Please and Thank you to all my future corrispondence requesting that you "get well soon". Guess I can't add "Damn It!" I would imagine that the only fluids Dave is going to want to hear about in the future will be "brews". You know that baseball is only a few weeks away!!!! Now that is something to look forward to! Stanford was knocked out of the March Madness in the first round. SJSU was never in it. Duke is gone now too. That's all I've over heard Dave... It's ice storming out here like the ice age is returning. It was 70 on Wed. and today it's 30 and pelting ice from the sky... we've got about 8 inches of it now and it isn't letting up! My friend CB is in town from Charlotte, NC. Her kids lasted about 15 minutes out in our yard w/full antarctic gear on. Mine were out in leggins & warm up pants for several hours.
I'm off to bed. Thanks for keeping us posted Shan! I bought our plane tickets to Seattle/Alaska today. See you on April 14th! Lot's of Love, Cindy
Shannon & Dave:
More fluid...no problem. That stuff has a way of showing up here and there. All I can tell you is this is exactly what happened to me and I am still here, five years later, to tell you about it. I hated it, you hate it...but it does heal itself and the time spent is time that heals Dave a bit more from the surgery. He will be home again soon. All the best to you both.
Paul.
Just wanted to let my big bro know how much I love you !!! I pray for you and think about you everyday !! Unfortunately I don't call everyday to let you know this. Or maybe its a good thing because like I was telling Shannon it's usually a very looud background & it seems like that might be a lil bit irritating to someone who probably appreciates a lil peace , quiet & lack of chaos & confusion.....so....know that I love you & I'm sending you orange. I feel like orange will flush all that stuff out. = )
I hope you know you are getting better....even when your getting worse your in the process of getting better = )
Akeela & the bee was a cute movie & Dreamer (Dakota Fanning, Kurt Russsel) cute horse movie. Hope your butt isn't too smushed and soar. You need a butt masseuse.....does insurance cover that? Hehe. Anyways, I'm wishing you sweet dreams & stregnth of body and spirit to get through this & I love you!!!!!
